Sometimes, you've just got to go for it - this stands true with both life and design.
When planning the look for our foyer staircase, I knew I wanted it to be timeless, but bold. This is the first glimpse into our home and I wanted it to be a creative one!
The beautifully classic black and white stripes we settled on were perfect solution.
The runner we had on our stairs prior to this new one was a thick, neutral jute. It was great for a time but it lacked any sort of personality. Living in an old century home, I always want to make the most of every unique characteristic we have here.
We're currently renting this home and have been since 2020. We're considering purchasing in the future but for now we're happy to have a great relationship with our landlords (who live next door) and who are very open to me letting me be creative with aspects of this home.
Note: not every landlord is this lenient - if you're renting, I'd always recommend asking before you make any changes to the home!
Brave and bold choices.
My dream solution for this staircase was inspired by Kelly Wearstler's gorgeous staircase at The Austin Proper Hotel in Austin, Texas. She has a number of different vintage rugs collected together to create a stair runner and its on top of a stunning oak staircase.
My plan - if we owned and weren't renting - would have been to sand down all of those thick layers of paint on the stairs and work with the original wood. We'd have re-stained them and let them shine in their natural glory. The company we worked with on creating our runner also offers a great selection of vintage rugs and we did briefly discuss that option. The cost ended up being way more than was budgeted so we passed on that and continued the search.
There is always a solution.
I'm not going to lie - it took a long time before a final decision was made. After considering what felt like a million different options and coming to a dead end time and time again, I took a bit of a break from searching.
That's when Jasmine from Dane + Jute, a beautiful local shop in Port Hope, reached out saying one of our original ideas may actually be a possibility.
This was another image I found on Pinterest for inspiration. I fell hard for these stripes when I saw them and the black paint felt like the perfect way to tie in our black living room which is just at the top of the staircase.
Our landlords however, were not into the black staircase - which is totally fine. So we took inspiration from this staircase. We widened the stripes, kept the white painted stairs and eliminated the neon yellow on the side.
I honestly couldn't be happier with the result and I'm incredibly grateful to Dane + Jute (and Jasmine!) for making this dream runner a reality. I can't recommend them enough.
HelloOOoo gorgeous.
The way Dane + Jute mitered the corners on our landing truly makes it look like an optical illusion which honestly is just a fun added bonus I hadn't considered.
